~ The Foundation's Educational Grants~
 
Since the inception of the grant program, eight years ago, the Kelso Public Schools Foundation has awarded over $44000.00 in grants to the local teachers and student groups in Kelso.
 
Grants Awarded in Spring 2004:

 

*Reading Adventure Club $400.00
The Reading Adventure Club will work in conjunction with the 21st Century Grant to use creative, challenging ways to bring more interest in reading to all grades at Wallace School. The project is designed to give students the ideas that through reading you can go anywhere, do anything and achieve your goals.

*Funding contingent upon remaining needed funds from 21st Century Grant

*Community Construction Kids $400.00
Through 3-D rendering, students will design and create their own buildings and affix their buildings to a map to create their neighborhood. Students will learn what makes a community. This project is designed to develop spatial ability, follow a design process and provide personal discovery in planning a virtual community.

Cecilia Calabrese & Dave Woods at Wallace Elementary School

*Dance Revolution: Fitness Integrating with Technology $325.00
This project would involve the purchase and utilization of two "Dance Ignition" Pads and the "Dance, Dance Revolution Game". These would be used as part of a dance unit, at sock hop family night, and the recess FITT program with the main benefit being to increase the aerobic fitness of students at Butler Acres Elementary School. The target would be the sedentary student who does not receive as much physical activity as needed but can relate to and be motivated by video games.

Jon Webb & Brenda Sargent of Butler Acres Elementary School

* Take Home Books $310.00
This project would involve the use of the "The Wright Group 'little books'" which are sent home with every child each day they attend class in the three kindergarten classes at Butler Acres Elementary. The student can share the book with other family members and show their reading ability. The project is designed to foster a love of reading.
