(Artwork by Leonora) Today is Autism Awareness day and month. For us, it's every day. . I sometimes get angry, resentful, frustrated at feeling as if I have to inform others and answer endless questions about a physiological condition, that is still being studied and not fully understood, that my family members happen to have. Yet I remind myself that acceptance doesn't come without first having that awareness. That insensitive, yet mostly well intentioned, questions of the uninformed serve as an opportunity. . Autism is not a disease. Autism doesn't necessarily equal genius. Autism isn't only in boys. Autism doesn't exist solely in childhood. Autism impacts the entire physiology of a person not just their mind. Autism sometimes affects language and communication skills but not their hearing. . Yes, I love my children. No, I don't wish I wouldn't have had them. Yes, it can be difficult to navigate the world with them. . Yes, those are all responses to questions I've been asked by complete strangers, neighbors, and readers. . My children can hear the taunts. They notice the stares. They agonize over wanting to be accepted. They have feelings just like anyone else. . Here's hoping we reach a status of acceptance and an awareness month is simply a reminder and not a wake up call.
